'Ridiculous' - Keith Wyness fumes about what he's heard on new Everton FFP hearing

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness reckons the Premier League will be a “laughing stock” if the Blues or Nottingham Forest are relegated after the season has finished.

Everton have already been deducted six points (reduced from 10 after appeal) for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) in 2021/22. The Blues, along with Nottingham Forest, now face a separate charge – with any punishment to also be applied to their points totals this season.

Both Everton and Forest are due to receive their verdicts no later than April 8 but if they go to appeal, the final resolution might not come until May 24 – five days after the final Premier League fixtures. Sean Dyche’s men sit four points clear of 18th-place Luton Town while Nuno’s side are three points away from the Hatters with 10 games left to play.

Wyness told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “My understanding is this…I believe that the hearings were held last week and this week. The calendar now says that any appeals would have to be heard in the last week of the season, or possibly the week after the season has ended.

“If that happens, it will be ridiculous. The league will be a laughing stock because relegation could be decided after the season ends.

“We are running out of time. It’s the Premier League’s own making. If all these appeals happen, which they may well do – it becomes even more frustrating.

“There’s also the fact that new rules are coming into place, which clearly shows that the current set of rules are not fit for purpose.”
