Having ended Rockmount’s three-in-row ambitions, Ringmahon Rangers are still hoping the FAI Cup Intermediate Cup rests on Leeside when they participate in their first-ever final on Sunday.
Another Cork heavyweight in the competition’s history, Avondale, were surpassed in the second of six rounds they hurdled to set up the decider against Glebe North. The latest of Avondale’s seven titles over a 13-year period was landed in 2021.
Ringmahon are well placed to sustain the county’s stellar record in what’s regarded as the Premier adult Cup competition outside of the FAI Cup.
Aidan Foley, manager of the southside club, outlined the magnitude of reaching the showpiece: “I don’t think people realise how big this would be for the club.
“Not only have we never won at intermediate level, we’ve never won a trophy at national level.
“For a club our size, it’s something our club strives to do.” The club’s size is one thing but their profile has mushroomed through the strides of someone Jurgen Klopp brands the second best goalkeeper in the Premier League behind Liverpool’s No 1 Alisson.
Caoimhin Kelleher just one of the gems to progress through the underage ranks, along with Alan Browne and the Umeh brothers, Franco and Jaden, but so too have a clump of this team.
Some have returned to their Alma Mater after sampling pastures abroad and the League of Ireland scene.
Eric Grimes is only 29 and could easily be still on the professional beat but opted to blend his business career with lining out for the club he joined Leeds United from in 2011.
Others have diverted from the national league to Ringmahon, among them former Cork City duo Evan Galvin, Ethon Varian and Cobh Ramblers pair Isa Kargbo and Anthony McAlavey.
