'Shame on everybody who sang it' - Jurgen Klopp responds to Luton tragedy chanting

Jurgen Klopp has addressed the shameful tragedy chanting of Luton Town supporters during Sunday's Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Sections of the Hatters' home support could be heard directing songs at Reds supporters of which the underlying connotation relate to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

While chants were heard during the first half, they were more pronounced when repeated in the second half and were subsequently noted by former Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher, who was working on co-commentary for Sky Sports at the game.

And while Klopp admitted he hadn't heard the songs during the match, he had a clear message for those involved.

“I didn’t hear that, no," said the Reds boss. "Shame on everybody who sang on it, but I didn’t hear it."

During the live broadcast, Carragher slammed Luton supporters for the nature of their chanting and insisted they were "better than that".

“At the start of the season, I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together," said Carragher. "I have just heard something a couple of times in this game.

"Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that."

The game ended in a 1-1 draw, which was sufficient to move Liverpool up to third in the Premier League table ahead of Arsenal.
