Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been left gobsmacked after Jurgen Klopp urged Premier League chiefs to arrange a replay against Liverpool. A 96th-minute Joel Matip own goal sickened the Reds as Spurs ran away with all three points but the officiating — and, in particular VAR — dominated the post-match fall-out.
Luis Diaz thought he had bagged a first-half opener after coolly slotting past Guglielmo Vicario. However, VAR intervened to rule out the strike — despite replays clearly showing the Columbian was onside.
Liverpool would ultimately end the game with 9 men and concede a crushing winner at the death to suffer their first Premier League defeat of the season. Refereeing body PGMOL offered an apology, which was quickly rebuffed by the Reds in a damning statement that questioned whether “sporting integrity” had been affected.
Jurgen Klopp echoed these comments at his recent pre-match press conference, going as far as to suggest the game should be replayed. He said: «The audio [from the VAR room] didn't change it [my mind] at all because I was not really interested in why things happen.
“I saw the outcome, I saw a goal, and I saw it didn't count. It's really important that we deal with it in a proper way. The only outcome should be a replay. The argument against that will be 'if we open that gate, everyone will ask for it'.
“I think the situation is unprecedented. I’m 56 years old and I’m absolutely used to wrong decisions. But something like that as far as I can remember has never happened. That’s why it should be a replay.”
