Barcelona are keen to take Giovani Lo Celso to Spain in January, reports suggest, as Xavi looks to strengthen his midfield options in the wake a of a potentially season ending injury to Gavi. The La Liga champions are already seven points off the top — sitting in fourth — after losing 4-2 to surprise leaders Girona over the weekend.
The Catalan club have also fallen behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the first half of the season, though they are already through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. However, with the winter window just weeks away attentions have turned to improving the squad.
Xavi lost Gavi during the November international break to a damaging knee injury that has put his place at Euro 2024 with Spain in doubt and the youngster leaves a huge hole in the side. Only Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski played more minutes last term in the league as outfielder than Gavi and he had started ten games before his huge blow.
With surprise addition Oriol Romeu struggling to have much of an impact, Sergio Busquets departing for America and Pedri so far missing time with an injury of his own, Barcelona are turning to the market. Adding to the surprise, Sky Sports report that it is Lo Celso that has caught their eye.
The 27-year-old has come into the thoughts of Ange Postecoglou in recent weeks having missed most of the early weeks with injury but with fitness issues throughout the squad his role has increased. The Argentine has started three of the past four games, coming on as a substitute in the 4-1 win over Newcastle, and scored against both Aston Villa and Manchester City.
