A VAR mistake on Sunday had led to comparisons with Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool being wrongly disallowed against Tottenham Hotspur.
Back in September, the Reds had two players sent off against Spurs but should have still had an early lead in north London, only for a refereeing mistake to lead Diaz’s opening goal to be chalked off. VAR official Darren England believed that Diaz’s goal had already been awarded on-field, leading him to not inform referee Simon Hooper to reverse his original decision. Upon realising his mistake, the game had already been restarted. The controversial incident sparked a wide-ranging reaction, with Liverpool writing a club statement and the PGMOL releasing the audio of the conversation between the officials.

On Sunday, a match between KV Mechelen and Club Brugge saw the Belgian Pro League experience, as described by ESPN journalist Dale Johnson, ‘“its own Luis Diaz moment”. Club Brugge forward Igor Thiago believed he had scored the game’s opening goal with a header in the 72nd minute.
However, the goal was wrongly ruled out after the VAR official missed that a defender was playing Thiago onside. The game went on to finish 0-0, much to the obvious frustration of Club Brugge.
