Eric Dier has been left confused at the lack of focus on Arsenal’s admittedly bemusing potential penalty mistake. David Raya, after the whistle was blown, passed the ball outside the six-yard box to Gabriel Magalhaes who proceeded to pick up the ball replace it and pass it back to his goalkeeper.
This went under the radar until post-match when Thomas Tuchel brought it up. It seems that only those of a Bayern persuasion had spotted the infringement and that even went for reporters in the mixed zone after the game, including myself.
Speaking to Eric Dier after the match for football.london, I asked Dier about the potential Arsenal penalty in which he was in close proximity to when Manuel Neuer collided with Bukayo Saka in the box as the referee waved away appeals to the frustration of the Gunners’ winger.
Asked about the incident Dier replied: «I think we should have had a penalty.» Bemused, I asked: «What for?»
Dier said: «What do you think I’m saying it’s for?» Again, and still out the loop, I pressed Dier for further explanation.
«When Raya passed the ball to Gabriel. It’s strange. No-one’s talking about it. He passed it like a goal-kick. The ref blew the whistle and he passed it and Gabriel picked it up. It was a very strange situation. But yeah.»

After the conversation, hopping quickly to social media to scour the feeds for reference, Dier was indeed completely correct. Tuchel explained post-match that the referee had said that he opted not to give the decision in something akin to the spirit of the game some might say.
