Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar face a difficult January transfer window in 2024 for a number of reasons. The winter window is often seen as the trickiest out of the two open markets in the sport with good deals hard to come by, player prices inflated and clubs far more unlikely to want to part with their prized possessions in the middle of the season.
That said, Arsenal certainly have needs in the window and in multiple areas. There are further complications due to the club’s need to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules that have recently seen Everton given a points deduction and Nottingham Forest nervously await news of whether they could face the same fate.
With that said, football.london summarises everything that both Arteta and Edu have said leading up to the January window to provide some context to what we might expect.Look out for the shift in words the closer the window comes and whether Arteta is looking at the window as a solution to his team’s problems.
November saw some of the early hints from Mikel Arteta regarding his views on the squad and in particular due to the impact of injuries. Following the Gunners’ impressive 6-0 win over RC Lens in the Champions League, the Spaniard was asked about Takehiro Tomiyasu’s performance but made sure to leave a subtle hint of an area that could need to be addressed in just over a month’s time from that point.
«I think he (Tomiyasu) was excellent,» the Spaniard said. “He's played a lot of minutes and we have a really congested period.
“We are really short at the back at the moment and we had to use the squad and make some changes.” Perhaps changes could be coming in the form of some dealings this winter?
