Ousmane Dembélé (26) had perhaps his best night in a Paris Saint-Germain shirt as he helped the club he joined in the summer overcome the team he left in a 4-1 (6-4 aggregate) comeback over Barcelona.
He was a player considered by the Catalan faithful to have been “ ungrateful ” for the support that the club and his manager last season, Xavi, had shown him. He was accused of having left the team in the lurch, with a release clause of €50 million (only half of which Barcelona would receive, the rest going to the player).
And the reception as Dembélé stepped out in the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc was rapturous, with his every involvement in the game soundtracked to a cascade of whistles and choice language. It was an “ emotional ” atmosphere in which the former player flourished, he scored the opening goal before drawing the foul leading to the penalty for the third goal which put PSG ahead in the tie.
Dembélé played with a smile on his face and as he explained to beIN Sports during his post-match interview, “Whistles don’t bother me.”
