Who is Ruben Amorim? Sporting CP boss emerges as candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Sporting Clube de Portugal manager Ruben Amorim has emerged as a potential contender to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Klopp announced on Friday that he would be stepping down from his role as Reds boss at the end of the season. The 56-year-old has been in charge at Anfield since October 2015 and has won seven major trophies during his time at the club.

And now according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, Amorim has emerged as a target for Liverpool to replace Klopp. It is claimed in the report that the Reds are looking at the 39-year-old as a potential option to become the club's next manager.

The report claims that, in order for Liverpool to hire Amorim, the Reds would need to pay €20 million (£17 million) to bring him to the Anfield dugout.

Who is Ruben Amorim?

Amorim began his coaching career with Portuguese top-flight club Casa Pia back in 2018. He had previously enjoyed a playing career in Portugal that saw him make more than 150 appearances for Benfica before retiring in 2017.

He went on to get a job at Braga as the club's 'B' team manager before taking on the role of senior team head coach in 2019. A year later, his form at Braga would see him take on the role at Sporting in March 2020.

Amorim has now been in charge at Sporting for nearly four years, winning one Portuguese top-division title in his first full season at the club in 2020/21. He has since guided Sporting to a second and fourth-place finish in the last two seasons, qualifying for the Champions League twice in total.
