Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he held a meeting with Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez over their early season discipline issues on Friday. The duo have four and two yellow cards, respectively, in the opening five games of the season.
Jackson picked up his fourth caution of the campaign at the weekend against Bournemouth with the referee warning him over dissent. That means the Senegal international is now one yellow from a one-match ban, which would leave Chelsea light of central striker options.
Fernandez, meanwhile, has picked up two bookings in the early stages of the season and Pochettino is keen to ensure his star midfielder does not have to walk the tightrope like Jackson. That's why the Argentine head coach held a meeting with the two players on Friday at Cobham.
«Today we were talking about that because we were in a meeting with him [Jackson] and also Enzo,» Pochettino said. «Come on, a striker with four yellow cards. To protest and to talk to the referee, if you need to get yellow cards, [do it in a] different action but not because of that.
»It's so easy and so cheap. I think it's going to put the team in a very difficult situation and he understood. We were talking about [Armando] Broja, but Jackson is 21 (sic) also and he's young, he needs to learn and improve and settle to become a fantastic player. He needs time."
Meanwhile, Pochettino has revealed the club still need to assess Moises Caicedo ahead of the weekend's clash with Aston Villa. The 21-year-old midfielder missed last Sunday's draw down at Bournemouth because of a minor knee injury he suffered while on international duty with Ecuador.
