Xabi Alonso 'secret' emerges as part of Bayer Leverkusen plan amid Liverpool links
Xabi Alonso reportedly had a plan to eventually manage Liverpool when he first took charge of Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso has emerged as the early favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The Reds boss announced last month that he would be stepping down in the summer, creating speculation as to who could be his successor.
As well as Alonso, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has also been linked with the job, as well as Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim and Thomas Frank at Brentford. Despite the other rumoured candidates, it has been Alonso who has remained the favourite for the last few weeks.

The former Liverpool midfielder was named manager at Leverkusen in October 2022, having previously been in charge of Real Sociedad B, the club he began his professional playing career. After finishing sixth last season, Alonso's first full campaign in charge so far has Leverkusen top of the Bundesliga and five points clear of Bayern Munich after their 3-0 victory at the weekend.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has provided an update on Liverpool's reported interest in Alonso. Balague has claimed that Alonso has told his agent the clubs he could go on to join from Leverkusen depending on how his stint with the German club panned out, with one of them being Liverpool.
