On the 23rd of December, Willy Kambwala (19) made his professional debut for Manchester United in a 2-0 loss to West Ham . The young centre-back was thrust into the side after an injury crisis leading up to the game left the team with few options but to trust in its youth, something the club has historically relied upon.
Since that defeat, Kambwala was used sparingly as a substitute in the closing minutes of games, before crisis once again opened up the pathway back into the team as United played out their derby against Liverpool, with Raphaël Varane (30) and Jonny Evans (36) adding to an injury list that has already seen Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, and Tyrell Malacia absent in defence.
Manager Erik ten Hag in his post-match comments suggested that this would not be the last United would see of the Frenchman with Varane and Evans unlikely to make a recovery any time soon. “ The decision to bring Willy in is because he has been training a long time with us, and in his first game against West Ham, he did very well, his progress is amazing .”
Ten Hag continued his praise for the centre-back, “ We were convinced he could do the job and he has done brilliantly. I am very pleased, very happy and it is another signal and a message for the future of Manchester United .”
