Tottenham might be fourth in the Premier League table with a game in hand but perhaps the most promising thing is just how disappointed Ange Postecoglou and his players are that they are not that little bit higher.
Spurs are 11 points off the top and few would have expected the Australian to have been aiming for a title challenge in his first season, particularly after losing Harry Kane on the eve of the season, yet that's what he's been doing the whole time.
Many pundits and even fans expected former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino to have the better season with his new side Chelsea, especially after all of the money spent there. Instead, Spurs sit 16 points above the Blues and with the Sunday's victory against Nottingham Forest so the north London side have already reached last season's total of 60 points with seven more games to go.
Yet, Postecoglou and the players are disappointed despite the progress. The Spurs head coach aims for the top at the start of every season in his career regardless of the circumstances.
There is now a grin that spreads across his lips as well as a knowing one on his press officer's face and those of the regular reporters that cover the club whenever a poor, unsuspecting newcomer in his press conferences offers up a question about the «top four race». So it came to pass again with the opening question of Sunday's post-match press conference as Postecoglou was asked whether Tottenham were now in control of the race for fourth.
The Spurs boss laughed before saying: «Yeah, go right for it, right from the start. Couldn't care less about the race for fourth mate.
