Mikel Arteta has been dealt a major injury blow ahead of Arsenal's clash against Manchester City. City will welcome the Gunners to the Etihad Stadium after the international break as either side looks for a foothold in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal head into the clash top of the table, but they're only one point clear of City. Last season, the north Londoners were just weeks away from crowing themselves champions of England but, after William Saliba picked up an injury, they conceded first place to Pep Guardiola's side.
Despite topping the table for large spells of the campaign, Arsenal fell short. While Arteta will be determined to not suffer a similar setback, the Gunners have been dealt a huge injury scare.
The Brazil Football Federation have confirmed the omission of GabrielMagalhães from the first-team squad. The Gunners defender had earned a call-up from Dorival Júnior but, after suffering an injury, he has been replaced by Gleison Bremer.
«I had already communicated previously that we work with a slightly more extensive list,» said the Brazil boss. «A pre-call, we can put it that way, and again, today, we had another casualty. Unfortunately, Gabriel Magalhães is uncalled. In his place, we are calling Bremer, from Juventus Turin, from Italy.»
Gabriel will now miss two games for his country over the break; a clash against England at Wembley on Saturday, March 23, and Spain at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, March 26. The 26-year-old has not been the only Arsenal player to withdraw from international duty this month, with Thomas Partey absent from the Ghana setup and Ben White snubbing England.
