Mikel Arteta made some key changes to his team for the clash with Luton Town that were rather obvious in their design. Jakub Kiwior came in for Oleksandr Zinchenko whilst Kai Havertz was swapped in for Leandro Trossard.
A forced change was made in the form of Ben White coming in for Takehiro Tomiyasu who had suffered a calf injury in the game against Wolves. All the changes represented a move which added both height and physicality to the side to cope with that of the home side.
That said, it became apparent that the physicality was still an issue. Two goals from corners, rising above all the taller Gunners stars allowed both Gabriel Osho and Elijah Adebayo to leap above the defenders, and in the second instance, David Raya to score.
But it was indeed Havertz who proved a difference-maker with his goal, moving into the right position to get yet another goal for the club. It wasn’t his height or added physicality however that benefitted him but the intelligence of movement which continues to see his stock rise.
So how do you analyse a performance that had so much chaotic factors to it? It makes sense to look at perhaps the individuals.
David Raya first of all will not come out with much glory considering the goal he conceded to Ross Barkley and being beaten in the air by Adebayo. For the former Chelsea man’s strike he was too slow to get down and the headlines regarding what Aaron Ramsdale might have done began writing themselves.
