Burning body found on Motherwell football pitch 'not suspicious' death

Police have confirmed there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances relating to the death of a man after burned human remains were found on a football pitch in Motherwell.

We previously told how the chilling discovery was made by a dog walker on the pitch behind Margaret Drive in the Lanarkshire town at around 9am on Saturday, February 24.

Emergency crews raced to the scene, with police launching a probe into the incident which they said at the time was being treated as 'unexplained'.

A cordon was erected as forensic officers carried out their work - and officers have now confirmed there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances relating to the death.

While formal identification has yet to take place, the man's next of kin have been informed of the death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Extensive enquiries have been carried out into the death of a man, whose body was discovered in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell, around 9am on Saturday, 24 February, 2024. Formal identification has yet to take place, however next of kin have been informed of the death.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course. Officers would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as enquiries were carried out in the area."
