Chelsea could welcome back defensive pair Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella against Brentford on Saturday after a period out of the side through injury. The Blues have been working with a depleted backline in recent weeks.
Silva has been missing for nearly a month now, including the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool last week, whilst Cucurella is yet to play in 2024. «We need to assess him and Marc Cucurella,»Pochettino said on Friday to reporters. «Maybe it is possible to be involved in the squad.
»Good news. If they will be possible to be in the squad." Christopher Nkunku remains out though after yet another major setback. «He suffered a problem in his hamstring and then we will see in a few weeks if he is available,» explained the head coach.
«Now he is doing recovery from Sunday. Unlucky, bad luck because to suffer again another injury is tough for a player that didn't play too much during the season and also came from the Bundesliga, from Germany, with some problems.»
It is the third time that Nkunku will have to spend a period out of the team having missed the opening four months of the season. Whilst he remains out, Silva's return would be a timely boost for Pochettino.
The Brazilian was taken off in the second half of the 3-1 win at Crystal Palace at the start of February. It coincided with a fresh blow to Benoit Badiashile as well with Chelsea's centre-back options continuing to suffer.
