Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a surprise move for Chelsea wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian is currently out on loan at AS Roma after struggling to make an impact on the pitch at Stamford Bridge.
His loan spell at the Stadio Olimpico is Lukaku's second successive season on a short-term deal in Italy having played over 35 games for Inter Milan, scoring 14 goals, last term. Under Jose Mourinho's management, the 30-year-old has scored nine goals in 15 games. His form in Rome has resulted in many pondering why he hasn't been utilised at Stamford Bridge amid Mauricio Pochettino's ongoing striker issues.
However, Chelsea are said to have reached an agreement with Lukaku that will see him leave the club permanently should they receive a fixed fee of £37million. Now, reports are claiming that Newcastle could make a move.
Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant have claimed that the Magpies see the striker as an ideal candidate to bolster their attack next season. Eddie Howe's men have suffered a double injury blow with their two current forwards, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, leaving them facing a possible change next season.
Lukaku's form for Roma has resulted in the Italian giants considering a permanent move. A report from Calciomercato earlier this season claimed Mourinho's side were seeking an alternative to the £37million fee and could offer ex-Blues striker Tammy Abraham.
