Liverpool cut short Fabio Carvalho loan deal at RB Leipzig and decide next transfer move

Liverpool have cut short Fabio Carvalho's season-long loan deal with RB Leipzig.

The young forward joined the Bundesliga side on loan back in the summer after struggling to break into the Reds' side since the turn of the year.

Carvalho started just one Liverpool game in 2023 - an FA Cup tie away at Wolves in January - and only made four of his 21 appearances in the second half of last term.

His move to Germany was agreed with a view to getting the Portugal Under-21 international more senior game-time at a Champions League-level club but Carvalho has played just 158 minutes in the Bundesliga this term.

Liverpool have been disappointed by the lack of playing time afforded to their player and entered into talks to bring him back to Merseyside earlier this month with a club with whom they retain a healthy relationship.

And Liverpool confirmed on Sunday after that Carvalho had returned to his parent club with the search now underway to find the versatile youngster another destination for his football at the start of 2024.

RBL sporting director Rouven Schroder said: "We were able to sign a young player with plenty of potential over the summer in Fabio Carvalho. Fabio was able to quickly integrate himself here, but both parties had expected more from his time here - especially Fabio in terms of his playing time.

"Due to the quality and competition within our squad at his position, we are unable to guarantee this for him. We held several discussions over the last days and in the end, decided to end his loan early.
