Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major blow to their hopes of signing Evan Ferguson – a player who Gary Lineker believes could be the perfect replacement for Harry Kane. The Brighton star has been heavily linked with an exit recently as the Premier League's top clubs look to land a new striker.
Ferguson, who sees his contract at the Amex Stadium expire in 2029, has featured 18 times for the Seagulls in the English top-flight this term, finding the net six times. Three of which were scored against Newcastle United, becoming the sixth-youngest player to ever score a hat-trick in the competition.
Despite his brilliant display just before the September international break, the Irishman first caught Lineker's eye on the opening weekend of the new season. After Ferguson scored against Luton Town, the former Tottenham striker took to X, which is formerly known as Twitter, to heap praise on the youngster.
Linker wrote: «Evan Ferguson scores in Fergie time. He’s a born goalscorer. If I was in charge of recruitment at Spurs I’d take a punt on him as Kane’s replacement. Apologies to Brighton fans.»
Instead of heeding the Match of the Day presenter's advice, the Lilywhites signed Alejo Véliz and Brennan Johnson, leaving the door wide open for Chelsea to launch a bid of their own. According to the Evening Standard, the Blues are long admirers of the teenage striker.
The report states that Brighton could demand as much as £100million for Ferguson. The Evening Standard add that the Seagulls are 'under no pressure' to cash-in on another of their crown jewels after Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez and grabbed Moises Caicedo for a British-record fee in the summer.
