Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister has revealed how he once earned the wrath of legendary manager Brian Clough.
The Scotland international, who started his career at Motherwell, joined Leeds United from Leicester City in 1990 and would go on to win the First Division with the Whites two years later. However, his decision did not go down well with Clough.
A former Leeds manager himself, having infamously lasted just 44 days at Elland Road in 1974, Clough had wanted to bring McAllister to Nottingham Forest, where he could have partnered a teenage Roy Keane in midfield.
But after the future Liverpool midfielder told Clough that he wouldn’t be joining Nottingham Forest, the controversial boss shouted one word down the phone at the Scot before abruptly hanging up.

“It was bad timing. Looking back, I’d have loved to play under Clough in his pomp,” McAllister revealed to FourFourTwo. “But I had options and just felt Leeds were a better fit.
“Brian wasn’t impressed when I said I was going to Leeds. “Leeds?!” he said, then the phone went down quite abruptly.”
Clough wasn’t the only manager who McAllister snubbed the advances of during his playing career. He also went on to reject Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.
But while moving to Leeds United over Nottingham Forest resulted in him winning the title, snubbing Dalglish ultimately cost McAllister a Premier League winner’s medal.
