Eric Dier reveals what used to infuriate him at Tottenham as he outlines huge problem in England

Eric Dier has revealed it used to «infuriate» him when youngsters «couldn't shake your hand properly and look you in the eyes» when they came to train with the Tottenham first team. Graduating from Sporting CP's academy in Portugal before joining Spurs in the summer of 2014, the 30-year-old has noticed some key differences between both countries when it comes to academy football.

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League tie against Arsenal, Dier opened up on the values and principles Sporting CP instilled in all players in their academy from such a young age. In England, however, the defender feels that youngsters are «not given the right education in how to be a person when they are young».

Another issue in England that he highlighted is that Premier League clubs can offer huge amounts of money to a young player and that in turn can turn their head and see them move on elsewhere. The ex-Tottenham man believes that is a «huge problem» in the youth system in England and more needs to be done to ensure clubs have more power over young players.

“I was extremely lucky that I grew up at a club in Sporting Lisbon who were incredible at looking after us as human beings," he said when in conversation with Neville on The Overlap. «From when we’re eight years old, the way they disciplined us, the way they taught us everything, the principles they installed in us to behave and be a good person, they were so strong. It came from a position of power because they’re Sporting Lisbon, and in Portugal every kid wants to play for them, so they could do that.
