Pep Guardiola bowed out of a domestic cup competition at the third round for the first time in his Manchester City tenure in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle.
Alexander Isak’s goal ten minutes after half-time was enough to see a heavily-rotated Blues team crash out of the competition at the first hurdle. Guardiola made eight changes from Saturday’s win over Nottingham Forest.
Oscar Bobb earned his first start of his senior career and did well but the visitors lacked a nous that only experience can bring. Nathan Ake wore the armband but was taken off in the second half as City tried to find a leveller that never came.

Bobb helped produce one of City’s best chances in the first half when he drove at the Newcastle defence, which looked shaky in the early stages. The gap opened up for Bobb to shoot but he instead decided to lay the ball to Alvarez.
He was forced wide and could only manage to hit the feet of Pope. Guardiola rued Bobb’s decision to be unselfish, remonstrating with his staff that it was a chance that could - and did - ultimately cost them.
Antony Gordon was a livewire when he came on at half-time and caused City a few headaches. Isak’s goal had St James’ Park in raptures prompting them to cheer every clearance and tackle.
Shortly after the goal, Gordon sent in a crunching but well-times challenge on Mateo Kovacic. Guardiola was seen applauding the tackle - whether it was sarcastic or not is in the eye of the beholder.
