For the sixth time this season Chelsea responded to a loss with a win. It's more times than they've managed back-to-back wins in the league all campaign but the late winner over Crystal Palace fell some way short of convincing Mauricio Pochettino's doubters that he is the right man.
The 51-year-old, who chose to select Ian Maatsen at right-wing instead of Noni Madueke at Stamford Bridge, was rewarded for his substitution in the final minute of normal time. Madueke, who also grabbed an assist from the bench against Wolves, was brought down inside the Palace box and converted the subsequent penalty.
For Chelsea it brought relief after throwing away a strong first half that should have seen them enter the break more than one goal ahead, let alone level. A familiar pattern took over in the second 45 though with audible frustration, slow ball movement and missed chances all creating a tense atmosphere once more.
Madueke spared the blushes though and ensured an immediate response to the Christmas Eve defeat at Wolves. For Palace Roy Hodgson showed his disappointment at conceding the late penalty after the game whilst Michael Olise provided a glimpse into why Chelsea were so keen to sign him.
