Martin Paterson scored a famous goal for Northern Ireland against Russia in 2013
League One club Burton Albion have appointed former Northern Ireland striker Martin Paterson as their new manager.
The 36-year-old former Burnley forward takes over his first managerial role having previously worked as assistant coach to Michael Duff at Barnsley and Swansea City. He will replace ex-Glentoran man Dino Maamria who was sacked in December.
Paterson also spent seven months in the United States working under Phil Neville at MLS side Inter Miami. He is best remembered by Northern Ireland fans for scoring a famous Windsor Park goal in a 1-0 win over Russia in 2013.
“I am honoured to be appointed manager at Burton Albion FC,” he told the club’s website. “I am excited to join this club and I am fully aware of the passionate fan base having been born and raised in Staffordshire.
“I have developed my coaching over several years and have extensive experience of being an assistant coach at first-team level most recently at Inter Miami, Barnsley and Swansea. I am ready to take this step and make the natural transition to manager.”
Chairman Ben Robinson said: “We were impressed with Martin’s vision for the future and his understanding of what we are all about as a football club and at 36, we see the same abilities and potential that we have successfully recognised when we appointed Neil Warnock, Nigel Clough and Gary Rowett as young managers.”
Paterson’s first game in charge will be a league fixture away at Derby on Monday night.
