Former Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber has said sorry for his words about black footballers.
He said he was sorry for saying that some black players, like Chelsea's Raheem Sterling, might have gone to jail if they weren't successful in their footballing career.
The comments were labelled by Troy Townsend from Kick It Out as an «absolute disgrace». Townsend said on X: «Former Norwich City Sporting Director casually racially profiling current and former NCFC players. Football or Jail it is then? Absolute disgrace! .»
Sky Sports now report that Webber has contacted and said sorry to the players and their families. In the interview with Norwich outlet the Pink-Un before he left the club in November. Webber said: «We want to help the guys who really need it, not the ones who are maybe privileged.»
«I saw that with our young footballers. Jonny Rowe wouldn't mind me saying it but him, Abu Kamara, Max (Aarons), Jamal (Lewis), Raheem (Sterling) back in the day at Liverpool, where they come from it had to work out for them in football, because the alternative is potentially jail or something else.»
Max Aarons' mum, Amber, has also responded to the comments, writing: «I'm shocked at Stuart Webber's casual racism and blatant disrespect for all of these black players and their families.»
