Frank Lampard has admitted to being baffled by a question Bill Kenwright asked him when interviewing for the Everton manager’s job.
The Chelsea legend was handed the reins at Goodison Park in January 2022, a post he held until he was dismissed a year later after a run of one win in 11 matches.
Lampard was handpicked by chairman Kenwright following a stint with Derby County and an 18-month spell in charge of Chelsea.
But despite a keenness to lure Lampard to Merseyside, Kenwright posed one interview question that threw the 45-year-old off his stride in an environment that Lampard described as a huge change from life in London.
“It was different,” he told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “From being in a London club and you know I’ve got a lot of love for Chelsea and the relationship with the fans.
“But going to a city like Liverpool, In football terms, it's a long way. There is a different culture, even in social terms there’s a big difference as well.
“It was one of my fears going in. I remember having a meeting with Bill Kenwright at the time and one of his questions was ‘Do you think a cockney can manage Everton Football Club?’

Lampard also revealed the level of toxicity between the club’s supporters and the board became apparent even before accepting the post but was quick to heap praise on the fans for their backing following his appointment.
“I wasn’t naive to it,” he added. “As the situation started to unravel and I felt like I was getting the job, I could see there was a breakdown in connection between the fans, the board and the manager that had just left.
