Chelsea have continued their role in world football as one of the busiest teams on the planet when it comes to transfers. In the space of 12 months they have signed 17 players for the first team as well as numerous youth additions.
Adding that to an already ageing, overpaid and underperforming squad has lead to major issues for the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital administration in their early days as owners. It has seen them receive widespread criticism and faith has been lost among fans.
After a £600million transfer splurge on players from 16-year-old Kendry Paez to 33-year-old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the league record fee has been broken and numbers truly crunched. The 12th placed finish, three permanent managers and two interim bosses only amount to more embarrassment.
Their is no time for wallowing and pity, though, as the club now look to clear up the mess, cut their ties with players and give the incumbent figure of Mauricio Pochettino some room and an organised squad to work with.
The 51-year-old started work on July 1 officially, but many of the decisions hashed out in contract talks over May have already come to fruition for the club. With fast-paced sales and quickfire snap choices being made over handfuls of players throughout the club, both first team, academy based or returning loanees, there is no such thing as a quiet day at Stamford Bridge.
Following the June 30 soft deadline to move players on in order to best register their finances for the 2022/23 accounts, a mad rush to shift players out of the exit door has proven as frantic as expected.
