Glenavon’s winning streak moved to five straight games on Friday evening as goals from Jack Malone, Aaron Prendergast and Stephen Teggart saw them claim a comfortable victory away to Newry City.
Lurgan Blues boss Stephen McDonnell may only be in the door, but he has got his side playing with rhythm and swagger, as they bossed the ball from start to finish.
Newry on the other hand need to sort things out, and quickly. They remain rooted at the foot of the table with one win from their last 14 League fixtures, and on Friday night they looked to be a team devoid of confidence, ideas and an identity.
Glenavon’s first chance came when Tom Murphy botched a clearance and sent it straight to Malone 40 yards out. Malone tried his hand at chipping the Newry keeper from range, but he didn’t get enough on his effort and Murphy raced back and kept it out.
Stephen Moan almost gifted the visitors a gilt-edge chance when he was picked in possession by Peter Campbell, but Barney McKeown bailed his right back out, making a key interception when Campbell tried to send Conor McCloskey in for a one on one.
Newry’s first opportunity came on the half-hour mark as Daragh Owens played a corner to the edge of the box and picked out Moan, who had run from deep. Moan’s first-time effort seemed to be on its way into the bottom corner, but Niall Quinn stuck a leg out and blocked the shot.
