ELEANOR BOB can win the Betfred Tommy Whittle Chase (GBB Race) (1.30pm) at Haydock Park on Saturday afternoon.
Trainer Venetia Williams is an expert in landing these staying chase contests and with the stable in such good form her eight-year-old mare can win the 3m2f feature on Merseyside. Grand National-winning handler Williams took the Grade One Betfair Chase over course and distance last month with Royale Pagaille – who bids for more glory at the top level in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day – and the Herefordshire stable has been picking up some nice prizes over the past six weeks. And they may score again in the Tommy Whittle – a race Williams won with a similar type in Yala Enki in 2016.
Having won a couple of times over hurdles, Eleanor Bob finally got the hang of chasing on her fifth start scoring at Chepstow and then Huntington in January and February at the start of the year. Following a fall when leading in a Novices’ Mares Chase at Fontwell she was given a summer break before returning at Haydock last month. She ran well for a long way that day, leading at one point before fading to finish fourth behind the reopposing Famous Bridge over course and distance on Merseyside.
Famous Bridge is sure to go well again, but Eleanor Bob runs off the same handicap mark with Nicky Richards’ seven-year-old carrying 6lb more. Eleanor Bob should come on for that seasonal return and off a low weight can reverse form with Famous Bridge and score. 2021 winner Enqarde, from the Grand National-winning stable of Dr Richard Newland, and top weight Bill Baxter are others who could go close but Eleanor Bob can hold them all off.
