David Raya was left to watch on as Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsdale was embarrassed after his catastrophic mistake against Brentford. Sitting the game out due to being unavailable against his parent side, the Spaniard kept things together despite the blunder.
It was Ramsdale earlier this season that the cameras turned to following a series of unfortunate moments for Raya at the start of his Gunners career, but for the first Premier League game since the two sides met in November, the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth man got his chance. 45 minutes in and it proved costly.
Taking too long to clear a ball upfield, Ramsdale was chased down by Bees forward Yoanne Wissa but could only kick his long pass into the onrushing player, with the ball deflecting into the net. Having been a bystander for much of the opening half, it was a moment of real self-destruction.
Unlike those Raya errors in September and October — when his place in the team was widely debated following a slow start — there was very little reaction from the bench this time. Previously Ramsdale had looked to be supportive of his competitor, clapping good saves and shouting encouragement from the bench.
After such a clear mistake, there was no such response from Raya. Instead, he simply turned to his left, speaking to a member of staff. It isn't clear what was said.
Also watching on helplessly, Reiss Nelson started to clap his teammate whilst a number of players ran over to him at the break, putting an arm around his shoulder.
