Steven Gerrard should be the next manager of Liverpool, not Xabi Alonso, according to a former Chelsea star who played against them both.
Gerrard and Alonso formed a high-quality central midfield partnership at Anfield during the mid-2000s under Rafael Benitez, winning the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup a year later before coming close to clinching the Premier League title in 2009. Both players have since gone on to carve out careers in management with very mixed results.
After leaving his role with Liverpool's youth set-up, Gerrard successfully guided Rangers to their first Scottish Premier League title in nine years in 2021, but a subsequent spell with Aston Villa turned sour, eventually leading to his sacking in October 2022. He is now struggling in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq.

Alonso kicked off his management journey by also returning to his roots with Real Sociedad B, helping the club gain promotion to Spain's Segunda Division for the first time in almost 60 years. Although they were relegated the following season, his achievements earned him a chance with Bayer Leverkusen and it is there that his coaching credentials have really come to the fore.
After taking over the German club last season whilst they were languishing in the relegation zone, Alonso guided them up to a sixth-place finish, qualifying for the Europa League. But this season he has taken them to even higher heights, with Leverkusen currently top of the Bundesliga and unbeaten all season.
