I spotted early signs Chelsea's slump was coming straight after Todd Boehly's arrival
Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has insisted that early key departures at the beginning of Todd Boehly's reign showed Chelsea's slump was on the horizon. Boehly bought the Blues back in May 2022 after previous owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Upon his arrival, form took a dip as a fallout with Thomas Tuchel led to the German head coach leaving. His replacement, Graham Potter, lasted just 31 matches before he was sacked and replaced temporarily by Frank Lampard.
Mauricio Pochettino was appointed permanently last summer, but despite plenty of money being spent on new signings, Chelsea are still marooned in mid-table. They are no closer to qualification back to the Champions League, and their current boss is under increasing pressure by the day to turn their form around.
However, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, Neville pointed to several departures which warned of what was to come at Stamford Bridge.
«From minute one, we all thought something wasn’t right there – it was chaotic,» he explained. «When they came in, they lost Marina [Granovskaia], the sports science department, the medical department, the manager within the first few months.
»There was already a lot of transition with Roman Abramovich leaving a few months before that – it didn’t seem like it was right." Some have argued that Granovskia's exit was the one which hurt the club the most.
