Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes Burnley fell right into Everton’s trap for him to score - and claimed the goal was a sign his fortunes are changing.
The forward’s first goal at Goodison Park since September was enough to secure his side all three points against the Clarets on Saturday afternoon. Not only did the victory lift Everton up to 15th in the table, but it was also the first time they had claimed all three points in the Premier League since December.
Calvert-Lewin’s block on an attempted clearance by Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric looped into the net in first-half stoppage time and decided a contest that, for large parts, was lacking real quality. But the England international, who ended a run of 23 games without a goal during the draw with Newcastle United on Tuesday night, believes his goal might not have come a few weeks ago.

He said: “I nearly had one in the first 10 minutes when I pressed him, so I thought I’d have another go. Thankfully, I got the ricochet.
“We know the way they play. They like to overplay at times, so we knew if we could set traps like we did today for the goal, we can capitalise on that. It was something we worked on in the week.
“A few games ago, I might not have got a goal like that, and it’s just the way it goes. You get one, and then they start to flow and go in.
“It was a long period for myself and it becomes a mind game at times. You’re thinking about when your next goal is going to come. I got one the other night, and I came into the game today full of confidence, and I think it showed.”
