Jarell Quansah has been the breakout star of Liverpool’s season so far, following in the footsteps of Stefan Bajcetic last season.
Handed his debut away at Newcastle United back in August, the 20-year-old has gone on to make nine appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side and also made his debut for England Under-21s. But for a player who has been with the club’s academy since the age of five, this is just the beginning.
It has been quite the rise for Quansah, following a successful half-season loan stint at Bristol Rovers last season. Yet even Klopp has admitted to initially being surprised by the defender’s progress heading into the current campaign.

It is perhaps telling that the German had admitted back in May that Liverpool would be in the market for a new centre-back this summer. In the end, the unexpected exits of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho prompted the Reds to focus purely on their midfield revamp.
Consequently, opportunity fell Quansah’s way and he has certainly grabbed it with both hands. But his rise doesn’t automatically end Liverpool’s search for a new defender in the months ahead.
Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are both aged 32, after all, and out of contract in 2025 and 2024 respectively. Despite a promising start to the season, it would not be a surprise if the latter left at the end of his contract, with the Reds needing to consider long-term replacements for both players regardless.
