Ireland star Jamie Finn has suffered a cruciate ligament injury while training with the national side ahead of tomorrow's friendly with Italy in Florence.
The FAI confirmed on Thursday morning that Finn will be unavailable for the game and revealed her injury is the dreaded ACL tear. The injury is likely to keep the Birmingham City star on the sidelines for at least six months, as she becomes the latest female player to encounter what appears to be an epidemic of ACL injuries.
The Italy clash is the first game of 2024 for Eileen Gleeson's side and is followed by a home friendly with Wales in Tallaght next Tuesday.
Finn's club Birmingham City also confirmed the injury: "The defender sustained an anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] injury while on duty with the Ireland Women's National Team.
"Finn will meet with a consultant to determine the best course of action.
"Everyone at the cub knows that Jamie will be back stronger and will continue to support her through every step of her recovery."
Finn had returned to the Ireland squad for the Nations League last year after suffering heartache when she was omitted from Vera Pauw's squad for the World Cup, though she travelled as one of the training players.
“It was a huge disappointment for me,” said Finn at the time. “Being involved in everything really, in all the [qualifier] games... I was heartbroken, a really difficult situation to be in, to be honest."
