Newcastle's hopes of landing Kalvin Phillips have been boosted by reports that Juventus could end their pursuit of him.
Eddie Howe's team have been interested in the Manchester City midfielder for some time and Phillips is keen to get more playing time ahead of Euro 2024.
Phillips has started two games this season and has only managed to come off the bench in the Premier League four times.
Juventus had been keen to bolster their midfield with him as Paul Pogba and Nicola Fagiolo both face long-term suspensions.
However, Fabrizio Romano reports that their infatuation has cooled after discussions over a loan fee and salary with Manchester City.
That means that unless something changes to bring Juventus back into the fold, Newcastle have one less rival in the race for his signature.
A move to Newcastle - whether permanently or on loan - could benefit both Phillips and the club.
Mail Sport's Sami Mokbel believes that the 28-year-old would 'start at Euro 2024' if he plays regular Premier League football.
'I think if Phillips is starting regularly, he will start at Euro 2024 alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham and if he stays in the Premier League at the very highest level - and this is no disrespect for Serie A at all - and he can prove himself back in the Premier League, I think he walks into that team,' he told Mail Sport's It's All Kicking Off podcast.
Despite not playing much at City, he is a regular in Gareth Southgate's England line-ups.
As for Newcastle, they face an injury crisis and are missing midfielders Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson as part of that.
Crucially, Sandro Tonali is suspended until next season for illegal betting in Italy - despite the fact Newcastle paid £52millio for him in the summer.
