It was all-change in Liverpool’s midfield this summer as the Reds completed a long-awaited engine-room overhaul.
After waving off James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on free transfers, along with unsuccessful Juventus loanee Arthur Melo, at the end of last season, Liverpool also cashed in on Fabinho and Jordan Henderson for a combined £52m after initially being caught off-guard by big-money interest from Saudi Arabia.
In their place, the Reds had Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai signed up before the start of pre-season. And following the exits of Fabinho and Henderson, they completed their summer business with the arrivals of Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.
Discounting Arthur, whose Liverpool career never extended beyond a 13-minute debut, Reds bosses will be more than satisfied with their summer business. After all, having parted company with five ageing, and in some cases injury-prone or declining midfielders, their four replacements included three much younger players with their best years ahead of them. The new quartet join Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara to complete Jurgen Klopp’s eight-man midfield contingent. Beyond the octet, academy starlet Bobby Clark is also knocking at the first=team door.
