For much of his debut Reds season, Mac Allister has been compelled to operate as a number six, a position in which, while he gradually impressed, isn’t the best use of his burgeoning talents.
But now largely freed from his defensive shackles, Liverpool are beginning to realise the full potential of the 25-year-old.
Building on his goalscoring outing at Brentford at the weekend, Mac Allister stepped up when required here after Liverpool probed without much conviction during a frustrating first half against a Luton Town side buoyed by a shock early lead.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Mac Allister’s inviting corner delivery from the right was met by the head of Virgil van Dijk to power Liverpool level. And then, moments later, the Argentine reacted to Conor Bradley’s quick throw-in to cross for Cody Gakpo to nod the Reds in front. They were never in danger again.
Just 125 seconds between the strikes, it was the first time Mac Allister had contributed two assists in a Premier League game, with his tally of six chances the most he has created as a Liverpool player in one match.
