When the final whistle blew in north London on Sunday afternoon, it was the Liverpool fans making their voices heard inside the Emirates Stadium.
Their team had just pulled off one of the greatest Women’s Super League (WSL) upsets in recent memory, beating title hopefuls Arsenal by a goal to nil. Even the most sanguine of Reds supporters could surely not have foreseen such a stunning result.
And yet, as Matt Beard and his players stood in front of the away end, joining in with a chorus of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, the sense this could be just the start of something very special was palpable. The victory - sealed by Miri Taylor’s 48th-minute strike - capped off what had been a memorable week for the club.

Two days before their trip to the capital, Liverpool Women had been officially welcomed into their new home at the AXA Melwood Training Centre. The state of the art venue, where so much of the club’s great history was forged, was repurchased by LFC in June and has been renovated and remodelled to ensure it is now among the best facilities in the WSL.
The site is a physical embodiment of the club’s renewed commitment to its women’s team and a sign the Reds are serious about becoming an elite top flight outfit once more. And Beard’s side further reinforced that notion on Sunday, toppling Arsenal - who finished 24 points above them last term - in front of a WSL-record crowd of more than 54,000.
Liverpool had to weather an early onslaught from the Gunners, with an inspired Rachael Laws saving from Lotte Wubben-Moy and Frida Maanum to keep the scores level heading into the break.
