In an official statement, Olympique Lyonnais have revealed that they have appealed the LFP’s decision to take no action following an attack on the team bus by Olympique de Marseille fans that left Fabio Grosso with a facial injury that required stitches.
On 29th October, the Lyon team bus was attacked en route to the Vélodrome. According to club president John Textor, Grosso was struck by a bottle in the face after the window closest to the Italian manager was smashed by projectiles thrown by OM supporters. The buses transporting Lyon’s fans to the stadium were also attacked on their approach to the stadium. The game was ultimately abandoned just minutes before the scheduled kick-off time. A new date, 6th December, has been set by the LFP. The match will still take place at the Vélodrome, despite last month’s events, and according to RMC Sport, fans will be present in the stands.
However, given that the events took place outside the stadium, the LFP affirm that it falls outside of their jurisdiction. The organisation has therefore not issued OM with any sanctions. “The disciplinary committee states that as the incidents took place in a public space, they are not the club’s responsibility. As a result, the committee will not discipline these incidents,” read a statement from the LFP on Wednesday.
OL responded on Thursday stating that they are “deeply shocked” by the disciplinary committee’s decision. Lyon have therefore stated that they will be contesting the LFP’s judgement.
