Speaking to Téléfoot, France international midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi (24) has revealed that a need for “continuity” drove him to leave Olympique de Marseille this summer.
Guendouzi joined Marseille from Arsenal, initially on loan in the summer of 2021. During his debut season at the Vélodrome, he played under Jorge Sampaoli, however, he left the club the following summer and was replaced by Croatian manager Igor Tudor. Whilst Guendouzi, who made his move from Arsenal permanent in the summer of 2022, initially played a prominent role under Tudor, his role diminished as the season progressed.
Before the end of the season, Tudor announced his departure from OM. He was replaced by Marcelino in the summer, however, the Spaniard lasted just a handful of matches before departing the club. He has since been replaced by Italian manager Gennaro Gattuso, whose current contract runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.
In an interview with Téléfoot, Guendouzi revealed that he left Marseille in search of continuity. “In the second season (with OM) it wasn’t the same. There was quite a bit of instability. We changed the manager quite a few times in the space of two years and there was a new team that was transforming each time. There was no continuity. So I had to make a choice for myself. I needed to make a decision for my career,” said Guendouzi. The Frenchman joined Lazio this summer and has featured 16 times under Maurizio Sarri.
