Mauricio Pochettino has been pining for the sort of fan love that Eddie Howe enjoys with Newcastle supporters. While both managers are having similar struggle-filled seasons, they couldn't be more different when it comes to the affections of their fans; the Toon Army continues to give its unwavering support to Howe despite a string of bad performances.
This is a far cry from how Chelsea's supporters have treated Poch, their Argentine coach. They've started demanding his removal — and even suggested old favourite Jose Mourinho as his replacement — following their frustration over last Saturday's 2-2 draw against Brentford.
Chelsea face off with Howe's team on Monday night, and one might forgive Pochettino some jealousy at the warmth shown to Howe by St James Park regulars. But there was no show of envy from the Blues leader as he talked about these contrasting circumstances, although he did say he'd quite like to receive such dedicated backing from the Stamford Bridge faithful, reports the Daily Star.
Pochettino, aged 51, expressed: «I am so happy to see they are supporting him like this because we are both in charge and want the best for our clubs. For me, Eddie is a fantastic coach and deserves big credit.
»I hope one day here they support me in the same way they support him because I am here, I am the coach of Chelsea and I want to win as much as our fans. I hope we have this support in the future."
Pochettino understands the fickle nature of football fans, explaining: «Look, the other afternoon I was walking on the Kings Road. I had this cap on but the people knew me and were really friendly and lovely.
