Michael Edwards has returned to Liverpool in a different capacity from his former position, but fans will be hopeful that his influence will help the club remain stable in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.
The 44-year-old is well revered by fans, having been the force behind the signings of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and many more senior stars during his previous role as sporting director.
Edwards left his post in 2022, but Fenway Sports Group holds him in such high regard that they have secured his return as CEO of football for the company, which is looking to expand its club portfolio. Edwards would therefore oversee any new acquisition, as well as Liverpool.

He is expected to lead the hunt for the club’s new sporting director, which is likely to end in Richard Hughes being appointed following his forthcoming exit from AFC Bournemouth. Edwards had initially rejected a return to Liverpool, but in-person talks with FSG in Boston this month ended with him agreeing to take up a senior role within the firm.
Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchinson says the first job in Edwards’ in-tray is to hold talks with Klopp to see if there is anything that would convince him to stay.
The German has been very clear about his exit intentions and his desire for a break, but Hutchinson says at least one more attempt should be made, possibly with the carrot of transfer promises.
