Millwall sack former Chelsea coach Joe Edwards with replacement already identified

Millwall have sacked head coach Joe Edwards after only three months, making way for ex-manager Neil Harris to come back for a second time at the club.

Edwards joined the Lions in early November and is well-respected in football after a long coaching career at Chelsea, where he worked with big names like Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. However, his time at the Den has ended sooner than expected after only four wins in his 19 games as boss.

The 37-year-old had a fantastic start with the Championship side, beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in his first game in charge in November. But since then, Millwal have only won three more matches.

Harris, a club hero and record goalscorer, was manager at the Den for over four years before leaving in October 2019. He is currently in charge of League One team Cambridge United and is likely to be given a contract that goes beyond this season by Millwall.

After losing to Wednesday on Saturday, Millwall are now in 21st place — just one point and one place above the Championship relegation zone. The Lions have been regular contenders for the play-offs in recent years but have found this season tough.

Harris' former assistant, ex-Millwall player David Livermore, is set to reunite with the club as part of his coaching staff. However, Andy Myers, who followed Edwards from Chelsea, may leave the club, and Adam Barrett will remain in his current role.

Millwall have a tricky away game at Southampton coming up, followed by a tough fixture list against teams like Watford, Leeds, and West Brom. Earlier this week Edwards confessed it is the hardest he's ever had to work in his coaching career.

Speaking to The South London Press, he expressed: «I think that it is fair to say it is [his toughest spell]. I've
