OFFICIAL: Lyon part ways with Laurent Blanc
Olympique Lyonnais and Laurent Blanc have decided to part ways by common consent, as revealed by an official press release from the Ligue 1 club.
Blanc’s position as manager of Lyon has been in doubt for many weeks. Those doubts date back to before the start of the Ligue 1 season and have only grown stronger. Lyon are yet to win a Ligue 1 game this season, and after three defeats and one draw, Les Gones sit rock-bottom of Ligue 1.
Within this context, reports have suggested that John Textor’s search for a successor has already begun. According to The Athletic, former Chelsea manager Graham Potter turned down an approach, whilst the American owner has also met with former Eintracht Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner.
However, according to L’Équipe, Gennaro Gattuso is currently the frontrunner to replace Blanc, whose tenure at the club was brought to an end on Monday. The Frenchman leaves Lyon after 11 months at the club. The mutual agreement which sees an end to Blanc’s and Lyon’s collaboration, also concerns assistant manager Franck Passi and Philippe Lambert.
Lyon expressed gratitude towards Blanc, stating, “Olympique Lyonnais wants to thank Laurent Blanc and his staff for their commitment and professionalism over the course of these past 11 months during which they were in charge of the professional team.”
