Gary Neville has reflected on the VAR controversy in Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The game was full of incidents, including the Reds being reduced to nine men, but it was Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal that has caught particular attention. The winger got the better of Spurs defender Pedro Porro before arrowing the ball into the far corner of Guglielmo Vicario’s goal.
The goal was disallowed for offside by the on-field officials and it was left to VAR to overturn the decision. However, no lines appeared to be drawn on the offside incident and the game was quickly allowed to continue. A statement from PGMOL explained that a "significant human error" had been made and that the goal should have stood.
After the final whistle, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville shared his disbelief at the officials’ mistake. However, when subsequently discussing the incident on social media, Neville took a more sympathetic view and blamed the push to shorten the decision-making process.

“The VAR mistake was a really bad one. However we’ve all been demanding quicker decisions and I think they have tried to enforce speed in decision making. Speed will cause inaccuracy and it’s now about a rebalance”, Neville said.
