Curtis Jones is firmly in the running for Gareth Southgate’s next senior England squad - though there is a feeling a dropout elsewhere might be needed for the Liverpool midfielder to force his way in.
Southgate has made a name for being loyal to those who have served him well at previous tournaments, with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, who has not started a Premier League game this season, and Jordan Henderson, whose issues are well-documented, regulars in the squad.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold - used as a midfielder by England - are the only certainties in central areas if fit going into this summer’s Euros, which realistically leaves three slots in the squad.
The likes of Conor Gallagher, James Maddison and James Ward-Prowse will also be considered for those roles, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer could also be used as a No 10 in the Euros squad.
But it is understood Jones is on the watchlist for Southgate and assistant Steve Holland, after rave reviews from England Under 21s boss Lee Carsley following Jones’s star role in the Young Lions European Championship triumph last summer.
Palmer, Anthony Gordon of Newcastle and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill have all stepped up to the senior squad since that Under 21 success and Jones is next on the radar to do so after playing an integral role in Premier League leaders Liverpool’s fight on four fronts this season.
He has proven himself as a versatile midfielder that can play in an aggressively attacking style but also covers a lot of ground, rarely loses possession and plays a key part in Jurgen Klopp’s high-tempo pressing game.
