Richard Dunne recently made no secret as to who he wanted to see replace Stephen Kenny as Republic of Ireland manager.
John O’Shea will take temporary charge of the national team for their friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland over the coming days but when asked who he would like to see fill the vacancy permanently, Dunne made himself perfectly clear.
“I would love Lee Carsley to get the Republic of Ireland job,” the former Irish centre-back said last month.
But unfortunately for Dunne, and many Ireland fans alike, Carsley broke his silence on his links to the role on Wednesday and committed his future to the England U-21s.
FAI director of football Marc Canham had stated that a new Ireland boss will be announced in “early April” due to the "existing contractual obligations" of their target.
So if that person is not Carsley, who does Dunne think it should be?
“I think the profile of Lee and what he has done with his underage teams at England has been really impressive,” began the former Manchester City defender.
“He’s someone who could have guided us ling-term into the future of Irish football with the way he wants to play.
“It was probably known to the FAI a couple of weeks again, a couple of months ago possibly that Lee wasn’t going to be interested in the job.
“There’s more people out there and the FAI just have to try and find the right one. The profile of Lee was good and interesting because of the jobs that he had so if they are going down that line of looking at people that have managed underage, U21, those areas, it means they’re doing their homework and will end up with the right man.
